"Madagascar's influential CAPSAT military unit on Sunday published a statement saying that it was in control of the country's entire military. The statement came to light as Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina said an "attempt to seize power illegally and by force" was underway. "From now on, all orders of the Malagasy army whether land, air, or military will come from the headquarters of CAPSAT," officers from the contingent said in its video statement."
An influential CAPSAT military unit announced control over Madagascar's entire military and declared that all army orders will originate from CAPSAT headquarters. CAPSAT soldiers left their Soanierana barracks, condemned a police crackdown, and urged security forces to refuse orders to shoot. On Saturday the unit joined thousands of anti-government "Gen-Z" protesters in Antananarivo, clashing with gendarmes before driving into the city and being welcomed at Place du 13 Mai with chants for President Andry Rajoelina's resignation. Protests began on September 25 over police brutality and utility shortages and have escalated into broader demands for political change amid reported killings and injuries.
