He lost support from the elite Capsat army unit, which joined thousands of Gen Z Madagascar activists protesting corruption and poverty and demanding his resignation. Demonstrators and some security forces filled a central square, with gendarmes admitting faults in their response. The UN says at least 22 people were killed; Rajoelina disputed that figure.
