"One skull is believed to belong to King Toera, the ruler of the once-powerful Sakalava kingdom on Madagascar's west coast. French colonial troops took the skulls during violent clashes in 1897 and brought them back to France as trophies. They were then kept in a Paris museum alongside hundreds of other human remains from the former French colony, an island country off the southeastern coast of Africa."
The Independent covers major issues like reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech and sends journalists to report on developing stories. The outlet investigates political finance and produces documentaries such as 'The A Word' about American women fighting for reproductive rights. The Independent provides free access without paywalls and requests donations to fund on-the-ground reporting. Madagascar received three skulls of Indigenous warriors returned from France, including one believed to be King Toera's, taken by French colonial troops in 1897. The remains were repatriated under a 2023 French law and welcomed in a solemn ceremony at the Mausoleum of Avaratr'Ambohitsaina.
