North Koreans left in the dark as foreign broadcasts cut DW 11/03/2025
"This is very bad for the people of North Korea and a really serious setback for human rights there,"
"The governments are denying the people of North Korea the freedom to access information and now all they will hear is Pyongyang's propaganda,"
US and South Korean authorities halted operations of media organizations broadcasting into North Korea, depriving tens of thousands of access to outside information. North Koreans previously could clandestinely tune into Radio Free Asia, Voice of America, and South Korea's Voice of Freedom, which activists say helped people endure hardship by revealing what the regime concealed. Kim Eu-jin, a defector, warned that the governments' actions deny North Koreans freedom of information and leave them exposed solely to Pyongyang's messaging. The North Korean regime has aggressively sought and punished people who accessed foreign media, using public trials, hard labor, and, in extreme cases, execution. Voice of America was effectively silenced after a US administration changed leadership and cut staff at its parent agency.
