Paraglider bomb attack by Myanmar military kills at least 20 at protest
"At least 20 people were killed and dozens more were injured in central Myanmar after the military launched a paraglider bomb attack during an anti-government protest on Monday night. The attack hit Chaung U, in Sagaing region, twice during a national holiday. Myanmar has been engulfed in armed conflict since the military seized power in 2021 and the town has been a key battleground in the war."
"I saw body parts [scattered] everywhere, a resident told the Democratic Voice of Burma news service. Residents said it was hard to distinguish civilians from anti-junta fighters among those killed in the first bombing. The bombs were dropped from paragliders fitted with small engines, a weapon the Myanmar junta has increasingly deployed this year to intensify its aerial campaign against those opposing it."
At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured after the military launched paraglider-bomb attacks on Chaung U in Sagaing region during a national holiday. The attack struck the town twice while residents held a sit-in protest during the Thadingyut festival. Witnesses reported severe carnage and difficulty distinguishing civilians from fighters after the first bombing. The junta has increasingly used powered paragliders to intensify aerial strikes against opponents. Footage showed crowds rushing to aid the wounded and search for missing relatives. Amnesty International called for protection of residents and said reduced international scrutiny has enabled war crimes. The junta scheduled elections for 28 December amid opposition bans or boycotts.
