Peru's interim government will declare a state of emergency in Lima after clashes between anti-government protesters and police turned deadly. Youth-led demonstrations across Peruvian cities have protested low wages, corruption and organized crime. On Wednesday, one man was shot dead and about 100 more people were injured when protests turned violent in central Lima; roughly 80 police officers were also injured. Former President Dina Boluarte was ousted by lawmakers last week amid criticism over crime. Her replacement, President Jose Jeri, refused calls to resign and said he would seek congressional authority to legislate on public safety. Prosecutors are investigating the shooting death of 32-year-old protester and hip-hop singer Eduardo Ruiz.
