Second round of Iran-US nuclear talks in Geneva ends after just four hours
"A fresh round of indirect talks in Geneva between Iran and the US on Tehran's nuclear programme, focusing on the terms for Iran constraining its nuclear programme under the supervision of the UN nuclear weapons inspectorate, has ended after just over four hours, according to Iranian state media. The talks were held against a backdrop of a now familiar slew of contradictory messages from Donald Trump, in which he said he believed Iran wanted a deal but also highlighted the US naval military buildup"
"Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, responded to the presence of US warships off the coast of Oman across the Gulf from Iran by saying the US could not destroy the Islamic Republic and appearing to threaten the vessels. Warships were dangerous he said, but more dangerous than a warship is a weapon that can send it to the bottom of the sea."
Indirect talks in Geneva between Iran and the US concluded after just over four hours, centring on terms for constraining Iran's nuclear programme under supervision by the UN nuclear weapons inspectorate. Oman acted as mediator, exchanging messages that have continued since this phase began on 6 February. Contradictory US signals accompanied the talks, with the US highlighting a naval buildup while saying Iran might seek a deal. Iran's supreme leader warned that the US could not destroy the Islamic Republic and issued a veiled threat to warships. Iran announced partial closures of the Straits of Hormuz for live-fire exercises. Verification by the IAEA remained central, and delegations included Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoys led by the special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
