On 13 August, wildfires in Greece forced thousands of people and livestock to evacuate from regions including Patras, Chios and Zakynthos. Hot, dry and windy conditions produced more than 150 blazes in a single day across affected areas. Parts of western Europe experienced exceptionally high temperatures this summer, with wildfires also breaking out in southern France and northern Spain as temperatures exceeded 40 °C. A fossilized skull of a child who lived about 140,000 years ago in present-day Israel displays anatomical traits of both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. Genetic data indicate one to four percent of modern human genomes derive from Neanderthals, and the skull could represent early evidence of social and biological ties between the two species. Tel Aviv University is associated with the analysis.
Driven out by fire. Greece's wildfires on 13 August, some of the country's worst this year, led thousands of people and their livestock to be evacuated from several regions, including Patras city and the islands of Chios and Zakynthos. Hot, dry and windy conditions caused more than 150 blazes to erupt in a single day. Parts of western Europe have experienced exceptionally high temperatures this summer.
(This skull belonged to a child who lived 140,000 years ago in present-day Israel. It contains traits of both Hybrid child. This fossilized child's skull might be the earliest evidence of interbreeding between humans and NeanderthalsHomo neanderthalensis), according to an analysis of its anatomical features . One to four per cent of our genomes are of Neanderthal origin, but most of these gene exchanges took place 40,000-60,000 years ago.
