Top US and Cuban generals meet at Guantanamo Bay
US General Francis Donovan met Cuban General Roberto Legra Sotolongo at the perimeter of the US Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay for a brief exchange on operational security matters. Donovan also led a perimeter security assessment of the facility and discussed the safety of service members and operational readiness. Cuba’s military confirmed the meeting and stated both sides agreed to maintain communication between the two commands. The US Southern Command said the exchange addressed security around the dividing perimeter of the military enclave. The base is on Cuba’s southeastern coast, about 430 miles (700 kilometers) southeast of Miami, and has been notorious for abuse of terror suspects detained after September 11, 2001. The meeting occurs as US President Donald Trump increases pressure on Cuban leaders, including an oil blockade, Caribbean warship deployments, and federal charges against Raul Castro, while Trump has warned Cuba “is next.”
