Women's groups gather in front of parliament in Indonesia amid protests
Briefly

Amnesty International described the increasing number of deaths from the government crackdown as alarming. About 300 members of the Indonesian Women's Alliance (API) rallied outside parliament in Jakarta, demanding an end to state violence and the withdrawal of the military from civilian security duties. The unrest began after a motorcycle taxi driver was killed on August 28, having been run over by an armoured police vehicle near crowds in Jakarta. The incident sparked nationwide protests over low wages, rising taxes and lawmakers' pay, forcing the president to backtrack on planned benefit increases for MPs. Clashes continued in Bandung with police using tear gas and rubber bullets, bringing the death toll to at least 10. API demanded the resignation of the national police chief, the release of detainees held without charge, an end to criminalisation of dissent, and protections for activists, journalists and legal aid workers.
