Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's tenure as chairman of ECOWAS encountered unprecedented challenges, particularly with the exit of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger under military governance. In a recent summit, he expressed concern over the slow activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force, required to address escalating security threats in the region. Despite efforts to diplomatically engage the exiting nations, they remain outside the bloc, contributing to a fractured West African region. Experts underscore the urgent need for a cohesive response to security issues threatening stability.
The ECOWAS Standby Force must move from concept to operational reality. I am a little bit worried about the slow pace of its activation, which is taking longer than desired.
While also having faith that Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger would eventually return to the family, Tinubu highlighted the fact that he had exhausted all diplomatic means to engage and dialogue with our brothers.
In the wake of multiple coups in West Africa, you now have a completely fractured region. So you have three countries that have basically walked out of the bloc.
