Guinea-Bissau in institutional crisis as president stays DW 03/05/2025
Briefly

Umaro Sissoco Embalo's presidential term officially ended on February 28, 2025, but he remains in power, blocking opposition leader Domingos Simoes Pereira from forming a government after Pereira's coalition won the parliament elections in 2023. Pereira is demanding new elections within 90 days, citing constitutional mandates, and calls for the reconvening of parliament to appoint electoral commission members and court heads. Most political entities and legal experts concur with Pereira's demands for immediate elections, highlighting Embalo's authoritarian hold over the government since his rise to power.
Embalo has ruled the West African country by decree for over a year, and seems intent on stopping Domingos Simoes Pereira, who is accused of corruption, from ever being appointed prime minister.
Pereira insists Embalo must step down immediately, urging that new presidential and parliamentary elections be held within 90 days due to the constitution’s requirements.
The constitution requires this. Before that, the parliament, which the president dissolved in December 2023, must be urgently reconvened.
According to Pereira, most other political parties in the country, legal experts, and civil society representatives share the view that elections must be called promptly.
