Iran war exposes BRICS fault lines
"Some BRICS members are directly involved in the current situation in the West Asia region, which has impacted forging a consensus on a common BRICS position on the ongoing conflict. As chair of BRICS, India has been facilitating discussions among members through the Sherpa channel, referring to the bloc's main conduit for communication and coordination among member countries."
"While BRICS has potential as a forum for dialogue, it is perhaps unrealistic to expect BRICS to issue a joint statement, let alone intervene in any manner. It can occur when the conflict reaches a hurting stalemate for the member countries, and Iran has had inherent problems with the UAE and Saudi Arabia, making consensus difficult to establish."
Iran, which joined BRICS in 2024, is calling on the bloc to take a strong collective stance against what it describes as US-Israeli military aggression and to support regional stability. However, BRICS faces significant obstacles in responding to Iran's demands. India, currently chairing BRICS, has maintained a neutral position by advocating for restraint and dialogue rather than taking sides. The bloc's expanded membership has created internal divisions, with Gulf nations like the UAE and Saudi Arabia expressing wariness toward Iran, while other members hesitate to adopt positions that could antagonize the United States. Experts suggest that achieving a unified BRICS statement on the conflict is unrealistic given these competing interests and existing tensions between member states.
