Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te canceled a planned trip to Africa after China pressured Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar to deny his flight access. The Presidential Office Secretary-General stated that this pressure included economic coercion and undermined aviation safety. Madagascar officials indicated their recognition of only one China. Lai was set to attend the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III's accession in Eswatini, Taiwan's only ally in Africa. The US also restricted Lai's movement previously, despite its support for Taiwan.
