US President Trump says Israeli captives to be released from Gaza on Monday
"Some of those bodies are being unearthed right now, as we speak. They're working on it right now, Trump said. It's a tragedy. It's a tragedy, he said."
"Of the living captives still held in Gaza, the US president added, they're in some pretty rough places, where only some people know where they are."
Twenty living Israeli captives and the bodies of 28 others are scheduled to be returned from Gaza on Monday under a US-backed ceasefire deal. All 48 Israeli captives, living and deceased, are to be exchanged for roughly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Some bodies are currently being unearthed in Gaza as part of preparations for the exchange. Hamas agreed to release all captives within 72 hours following the ceasefire start. Israel ratified the ceasefire, began withdrawing troops to designated locations, and initiated the 72-hour countdown. Reports indicate difficulties locating all deceased captives, which could complicate the exchange. Displaced Palestinians began returning home amid the pullback, while plans for Gaza’s future and a Palestinian state remain uncertain. A visit to Cairo and an address at the Israeli Knesset are scheduled this weekend.
