A family moved into a 2000s builder-grade house in 2017 and gradually added character to stand out from nearby homes. The laundry room became a priority because it is one of the most used spaces for a family of five with three young children. The existing layout included only one linen closet and one utility closet, which did not provide enough storage. A wire rack-style shelf also created more problems than it solved. To improve functionality, the husband built custom cabinets to better organize the room. A pull-out clothing rack was added for air-drying and was later moved next to the washer and dryer for daily use. Additional storage above the washer and dryer would be added if the space were redone.
"“[The laundry room] was and still is one of the most used spaces in the house, so making it functional and a place that I want to spend time was very important,” Crystal explains. As a mother to three young children, the laundry room is a constant in Crystal and her husband's daily lives - but the builder-grade setup wasn't keeping up."
"“I needed storage - this house has one linen closet and one utility closet, so creating storage was a must,” Crystal says. And for a family of five, those two closets weren't enough. The room simply didn't work for the family. Plus, it had one “horrid wire rack-style shelf” that caused more problems for the space's functionality than it helped with its organization."
"“So instead, Crystal's husband built custom cabinets that made the small room work much harder. They originally put a pull-out clothing rack in a cabinet, so they could air-dry items and then hide it when not in use. But Crystal recently moved it over the washer and dryer because they use it every day, and there was no need to hide it.”"
"“While the family has a ton of storage now in their laundry room, Crystal still shares that she would add more storage above their washer and dryer - rather than the shelf they made - if she were to redo the space today.”"
