This 1939 Bungalow Sat Untouched for Decades Until a Reno Unearthed Gorgeous Details
""When my husband and I purchased this 1939 bungalow in Austin's Hyde Park Historic District, what drew us in was that it hadn't been touched in decades. After being owned by the same woman for more than 50 years - where she raised 12 children - the house was tired but intact, offering the blank slate we had been searching for," begins Ali Burgoon Nolan, an interior designer and founder of Studio Burgoon, of this bungalow in Austin's Hyde Park neighborhood."
""When it came to restoring and redesigning the house for her family, Ali explains that she was inspired by a family member's Arts & Crafts lake house in Michigan, and worked to add in period-inspired details to the historic home. Elements like "mouth-blown glass transoms, William Morris wallpaper, and thoughtfully designed millwork" blend with a custom-built bar and media unit made of old-growth oak."
Ali Burgoon Nolan and her husband purchased a 1939 bungalow in Austin's Hyde Park that had remained largely untouched for decades. Renovation uncovered original longleaf pine shiplap under drywall, prompting a restoration focused on craftsmanship and historic character. The design incorporated period-inspired elements such as mouth-blown glass transoms, William Morris wallpaper, and custom millwork alongside a custom-built old-growth oak bar and media unit. The project enlarged the home and reconfigured the floor plan to improve flow, expand the kitchen and bathrooms, and create better indoor-outdoor access. A discreet second-floor addition was designed to respect the historic context while enhancing livability for cooking and hosting.
