The Apollo Theater has closed for a $65 million, yearlong renovation, marking its most extensive upgrade in 91 years. Upgrades will include a restored façade, an LED marquee, an expanded lobby, new seating, and modern audiovisual systems, while preserving historic elements like the signature wall. Performances will temporarily shift to Apollo Stages at the Victoria during the renovation. Scaffolding has been erected, and access has been rerouted. The renovation is designed to promote connectivity and community engagement through features like a café and improved windows.
The Apollo Theater officially closed its doors on July 1 for a $65 million, yearlong renovation—the most ambitious in its 91-year history.
Now, the 1,500-seat landmark is undergoing a comprehensive facelift, featuring a restored façade, upgraded LED marquee, expanded lobby, new seating and modern AV systems.
While the main auditorium is shuttered, performances will temporarily relocate to the Apollo Stages at the Victoria, just down 125th Street.
The renovation aims to make the Apollo feel more open and community-connected, featuring a café and new street-facing windows that will anchor the expanded lobby.
