The project is a comprehensive renovation in Tokyo of a 35-year-old corporate dormitory into a contemporary rental residence. The setting is described as a dense metropolis where people are embedded in intense social networks. The proposal introduces an urban housing prototype that balances personal autonomy with shared living. It responds to site-specific conditions while addressing a universal architectural challenge: designing communal spaces that do not require social interaction. The goal is sophisticated coexistence between the individual and the collective, enabling residents to share space without being forced into engagement. The project is led by R/URBAN DESIGN OFFICE with lead architects Tomohiko Amemiya and Kai Iwasaki.
"Located in Tokyo, fuu Oimachi by LATIERRA is a comprehensive renovation of a 35-year-old corporate dormitory transformed into a contemporary rental residence. In a dense metropolis where individuals are constantly embedded in intense social networks, this project proposes a novel urban housing prototype that balances personal autonomy with shared living."
"While responding to site-specific conditions, it addresses a universal architectural challenge: how to design communal spaces that do not mandate social interaction, but instead offer a sophisticated coexistence between the "individual" and the "collective.""
