Hundreds of thousands at risk as obsolete energy meters face June 2025 shutdown
Briefly

Over 300,000 UK households could be left without heating or hot water due to the imminent shutdown of the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) on June 30, 2025, as families are encouraged to upgrade to smart meters. The RTS allows suppliers to toggle between electricity rates but is now outdated. Approximately 600,000 households still use these meters, and energy regulators stress the urgency of replacing them with smart meters, which provide detailed energy usage data and eliminate the need for manual readings, thereby supporting families during rising energy costs.
The Radio Teleswitch Service will be permanently switched off on June 30, 2025, leaving over 300,000 households at risk of losing heating if they fail to upgrade.
Smart meters are the only compatible replacements for RTS meters, providing real-time usage data and eliminating manual readings while ensuring access to cheaper tariffs.
