Los Gatos looks to the future with Restoration Hardware project
"From my perspective, our small town character is our brand, and we're working very hard to approve that, Feinberg said. There has to be a way for us to compromise to give Restoration Hardware what they want and the beautiful design of the building that represents their brand while, at the same time, maintaining the small town character that the original developers of the planned development in Old Town envisioned in the 1990s."
"The Los Gatos Town Council on Oct. 7 unanimously approved the exterior modifications and conditional use permit requested by Restoration Hardware . The luxury home furnishing brand's application moved forward to council after planning commissioners approved it on Aug. 27. This means that RH has been given the green light to homogenize the mismatched exteriors of Building E at 50 University Ave., which used to house Steamers restaurant and The Gap clothing store."
Los Gatos Town Council unanimously approved Restoration Hardware's exterior modifications and conditional use permit for Building E at 50 University Ave. The decision follows planning commission approval on Aug. 27 and allows RH to unify the previously mismatched facades that housed Steamers restaurant and The Gap. Historic Preservation Committee members Alan Feinberg and Susan Burnett opposed the alteration, citing loss of small-town character, lack of facade personality, and excessive material variety. Business leaders, including Chamber CEO Jennifer Lin and Pennant Properties' Jim Foley, supported RH as a potential anchor to draw visitors and boost nearby small businesses. The mayor questioned long-term sustainability if RH departs; applicants intend to remain.
