After a two-year closure, Tompkins Square Park's public restrooms have been completely overhauled at the cost of $5.6 million to rectify their poor reputation. Previously infamous for their filthy conditions, which included drug use, the renovated facilities now feature modern amenities like porcelain fixtures and heating. The park also sees new play areas, picnic tables, and ADA-compliant access. Surveillance will ensure cleanliness, with daily operating hours established to foster a safer experience for visitors, responding to longstanding concerns about the bathrooms' condition and misuse.
They were as nasty as nasty could be. There was a lot of piss in the urinals. There was a lot of piss on the floor. There was a lot of, um, doodoo in the toilets.
With the building being so outdated and needing so much work, it just kind of welcomed like a lot of bad activity.
They will have regular hours, we will be monitoring it really closely.
There is a need for continuous maintenance and monitoring to ensure that facilities remain clean and safe, so we don’t fall back into the previous state.
