Sardineta: A Fisherman's House Rebuilt as a Holiday Rental in Brittany
"The renovation focused on addressing existing issues while preserving the character of the building, using a breathable insulation system of hemp and hydraulic lime."
"The interiors feature improved thermal performance, balanced humidity, and better acoustics, with materials like waxed concrete floors and oak cabinetry."
"Much of the furniture was built by the owners themselves, supplemented with sourced pieces from flea markets, reflecting a blend of utilitarian and unique elements."
"Ceri noticed traces of her Welsh home while exploring Saint-Cado, including a Welsh flag in the chapel, highlighting the cultural connections of the area."
The Sardineta project in Saint-Cado features two holiday rentals created from a historic fisherman's house. Charly Derouet and Ceris Harris renovated the structure, which dates back to the mid-19th century, addressing damp issues while maintaining its character. They used breathable insulation and designed interiors with improved thermal performance. The apartments feature self-built furniture and durable materials, reflecting the building's history. The exterior was finished by a local mason, and the couple found connections to Welsh heritage during their exploration of the island.
