Dagenham's Valance House moat restoration will proceed with £800,000 funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Arts Council England. The project aims to deepen the moat, enhance wildlife habitats, and repair bank undercutting. This historic manor has undergone several changes since its 13th-century origins, functioning as a town hall and later a library and museum. The restoration includes a new planting scheme along the moat's edges, and works are set to complete by Spring 2026. Future plans may involve further repairs to the manor house, ensuring the preservation of this historic site.
The long-term plans also include repairs to the manor house itself as well as a review of the 1929 extension.
Barking and Dagenham Council has now agreed to a plan to restore the remaining section of the moat.
The £800k restoration works are being funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Arts Council England's Museum Estates Development Fund.
The works are scheduled to start later this year and are expected to be completed by Spring 2026.
