'Wasteland' close to Ballina train station undergoes long awaited transformation
The embankment next to Ballina train station has been cleared, with tree stumps, shrubbery, and litter removed to create a cleaner appearance. Councillors noted significant visual improvement and welcomed the progress. The embankment is a key first view for motorists entering Ballina from the N26 Foxford direction, and it had previously not created a welcoming impression. Drainage works are nearing completion, and planting is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Maintenance will be carried out by the town gardener and the council’s outdoor team. Funding confirmation paused earlier timelines, and councillors requested the site be made presentable ahead of Ireland taking over the EU Presidency. Additional funding later in the summer will support full landscaping works.
"The railway embankment is looking so much better, so many people are complimenting the appearance since works started. Its been great to see the progress on that,"
"She noted that the embankment is one of the first views for motorists entering Ballina from the N26 Foxford direction, adding that it had not been creating a welcoming first impression of the town."
"Cllr Duffy confirmed that drainage works are now nearing completion, with planting due to begin in the coming weeks. The site will then be maintained by the town gardener and the council's outdoor team."
"Works had originally been scheduled for completion by March 2026, but were put on pause while the council awaited confirmation of funding to support nature-based improvements along the embankment. Councillors subsequently asked for the site to be made presentable ahead of Ireland taking over the EU Presidency."
