"Whether you're going off-grid, need power during an outage, or are simply camping for the weekend, portable power stations are essential for keeping devices and appliances powered and ready to go."
"We ran dozens of portable power stations through the gauntlet in our lab in Kentucky, evaluating how much power each station can provide relative to how much it draws to charge, to determine its overall efficiency."
"Once all data was gathered, we also compared units using a 'Round Trip Efficiency' metric that describes how efficiently a unit delivers power relative to how much it draws to charge."
Portable power stations offer compact solutions for powering devices during off-grid activities, emergencies, and camping trips, despite their substantial weight. Testing evaluated dozens of units by measuring power consumption in watt-hours and calculating round-trip efficiency—how effectively each station delivers power relative to charging requirements. Large-capacity stations (1,100-2,100Wh) and small-capacity stations (600-1,100Wh) were evaluated separately to ensure accurate comparisons among similarly-sized devices. Lab testing measured both charge and discharge processes, tracking watt-hours consumed and discharged over time. Ten portable power stations were selected based on expert recommendations and laboratory testing to identify top performers in each category.
