"There wasn't a dry eye in the house during 'Like a Prayer' at Totally 80s last weekend. A reflection, a release, a reminder of what it meant to live, love, and hold onto each other in a time that asked so much of this community."
It's amazing that totally organically, Evan, my son and Nick, Gene's son, about a year ago started making music together. They've known each other their whole lives, but this bond they've had with music and this album they've done is crazy good.
Giuseppe Verdi donated all royalties from his operas to the construction and administration of a luxurious retreat for retired musicians, designed by architect Camillo Boito.
The growing Aadam Jacobs Collection is an internet treasure trove for music lovers, especially for fans of indie and punk rock during the 1980s through the early 2000s.
R&B in the 21st century has been in a constant state of flux, tugged between safe traditionalism and blurry attempts at progression. For the last decade-plus that "progression" has seen R&B music become more indebted to trap records and the moody atmospherics of alternative bands like Radiohead, Coldplay, or My Bloody Valentine.
Footage of the "Careless Whisper" singer at the height of his fame on stage at Paris's Bercy Arena was captured by 14 cameras on 35mm film during his first solo tour, the 1988 Faith Tour. Filmed over two nights, it shows Michael fresh off the release of his hit album Faith, at a life-changing moment in his career.
Mainstream theaters didn't want to screen the film because of how political it was. We did, and we had packed houses. Years later, we screened 'Black Panther.' The first week, we showed the film on screens one, two, and three, and we were selling out every show.
Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre, the movie palace just northeast of Lake Merritt, celebrates its 100th birthday this week. And while some classic East Bay movie houses are still in operation, like the Jack London Cinema and Landmark Piedmont Theatre, there's something undeniably unique about the Grand Lake Theatre, with its Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, reasonably priced snacks and location smack dab in the middle of the Town.
In May 2026 my father will be turning 95 years old! We, his three children, wish to throw him a party for about 12 people. Some guests will be elderly with walkers and canes. We would love to host this on a budget and preferably either in the San Fernando Valley or on the Westside. If it really fits the bill, we would consider other parts of Los Angeles as well. Maybe a lovely patio or some sort of charming restaurant that harks back to another time that my father would enjoy.
The Super Bowl Halftime Show is not merely a performance; it's a cultural phenomenon that has evolved over the years into a spectacular showcase of music, artistry, and entertainment. As we anticipate Bad Bunny's upcoming performance at Super Bowl 60, it's the perfect time to delve into the history, evolution, and burning question on many minds - how long is the Super Bowl Halftime Show?
My father has always been a sociable person who loves nothing better than chatting with relatives, friends, and ex-colleagues. So it seemed like a fun idea to throw him a surprise party for his milestone 90th birthday at a cricket club in the English town where I grew up. Our intention was "go big or go home," and my sister, Alison, and I asked dozens of people to join the celebration.
Taj Mahal looked out at his fans and stated the obvious: This is off the charts. Indeed, it was a very special night for the legendary Berkeley-based blues musician, who was being honored by an numerous high-profile musicians in concert at The Masonic in San Francisco on Saturday (Feb. 21). The role call featured a number of other Bay Area greats including Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Joan Baez and Van Morrison as well as many other notable artists
Christopher T. Hewitt, a lifelong Staten Islander who fed, cared for, and quietly held up his community through decades in the food business, died suddenly at his home in Sunnyside. He was 50. Hewitt's path into food began in the produce department of the old A&P in New Dorp, where he worked as a teenager. He went on to spend years on the East Shore at Delfini's and Top Tomato, gaining the hands-on experience that shaped his career, particularly at Delfini's. In the early 2000s, he owned The Misty Lounge, a Grant City neighborhood bar he ran with friends.
The Marshall Tucker Band rocked The Guild in Menlo Park hard for 90 minutes on Friday night, turning in a 14-song performance that was an absolute testament to both the lasting greatness of this South Carolina troupe and the power of Southern rock. Following a winning opening set from Sofia Claire a promising country music vocalist who hails from right up the road in Redwood City the headliners took the stage and immediately busted into the title track from 1979's Running Like the Wind.
In the midst of Grammy weekend, New Edition's L.A. tour stop at the Kia Forum on Saturday was a forceful statement on longevity and a reminder never to underestimate the power of R&B. Seeing all six members of the iconic vocal group on stage for a sold-out crowd more than four decades after their careers began reflects a group still fully present, with a visible love for the music they continue to perform.
The annual In Memoriam segment paid tribute to artists like Roberta Flack, D'Angelo and Ozzy Osbourne. From heavy punk numbers to jazzy R&B ballads and solemn country-infused performances, the academy celebrated those who have shaped music, whether it's on the artistry end or the business end of things. It started off with a candlelit tribute from McEntire, Brandy Clark and Lukas Nelson.
They should have known right off the bat that they had something special, as the opening night had Dr. John, Stevie Wonder and Johnny Winter performing to the likes of Mick Jagger and Carly Simon in the audience. Over the years, the 400-person capacity club became the place to be to see one's favorite artist up close or catch an up-and-coming unknown.
The result was a clunky moment in which Cher was brought out to present the award for Record of the Year before Trevor Noah interrupted her to hand over her lifetime-achievement award. Whether or not the Grammys intended for her to make a speech was unclear, but she did nonetheless, and rightfully so! "Thank you, I guess I'm supposed to walk off now. All right," she drifted, before being intercepted
When I realized that two cherished New York comrades in the guitar world were also turning 70 within weeks of my crossing over that age threshold, it occurred to me that some sort of sonic ritual performance might be in order. Hence '70 IS THE NEW 70.' The intent is to create an immersive, compelling 70-minute ambient exploration that reflects this experience in all its wonder, exhilaration, dread, astonishment, and creeping surreality.
Today is the actual 50th anniversary of the day that Dee auditioned in the band, 1976. Here's the diary entry. 'Danny Snider' - he wasn't Dee yet - 'auditions for Twisted Sister', February 7th, 1976.
