Our plane touched down at Linate Airport in Milan later than expected and, as the hands on the clock moved past 2 p.m., we made a beeline for Dal Bolognese, knowing they'd seat us for lunch despite the hour. Antonio, one of the restaurant's beloved waiters, whisked away our bags and brought back costoletta di vitello and two glasses of Barolo, as we texted an ETA to our Airbnb host.

For these individuals, extreme emotional distress, panic, anger, frustration, and even disgust have been noted (Brout, 2018). Misophonia is a neurophysiological condition in which the amygdala becomes activated by sounds that should not be alarming or dangerous (Kumar, 2017). The context of triggers-such as whether or not something is rude, offensive, or otherwise disgusting can affect the emotional aftermath of a trigger, but it does not change the aversive fight-flight-freeze response.

On many college campuses, tensions are sharper than ever, and for some students and faculty, simply sharing an idea carries a deep sense of hesitation. My work over the past several decades has focused on teaching evidence-based thinking to navigate such charged environments. This approach becomes especially relevant when we consider the twin processes psychologists call assimilation and accommodation, which describe how we learn and adapt to new information.
