ContourGlobal, the independent power producer backed by KKR, has inaugurated a nearly $500 million solar-and-storage facility in Chile's Atacama desert that stores daytime solar energy and delivers it after sundown. The Victor Jara hybrid plant combines 231 megawatt-peak of photovoltaic capacity with 1.3 gigawatt-hours of battery storage, capable of delivering 200 megawatts of power for up to 6.5 hours at night. ContourGlobal calls it Latin America's longest-duration utility-scale battery system.
The license was granted to Tesla Energy Ventures Ltd. by UK energy regulator Ofgem after a seven-month review process. According to Ofgem, the license took effect at 6 p.m. local time on Wednesday and applies to Great Britain. The approval allows Tesla's energy business to sell electricity directly to customers in the region.
On Jan. 16, lithium-ion batteries located in the Moss Landing storage facility and owned by Vistra, a Texas-based energy company, ignited and burned for two days. The fire, which burned about 55% of what was at the time the world's largest battery energy storage system, made international headlines and caused local concern and confusion over the possible environmental and health effects of the disaster.
