"This project is symbolic of what we've done over the last 12 years, reshaping the streets and the city," Christophe Najovski, the city's deputy mayor in charge of green spaces, stated during the opening ceremony.
"Sharrows are just the weakest thing that a transportation agency could do," said Christopher White, executive director of San Francisco Bike Coalition. "They are not effective at keeping people safe; they are hardly better than nothing at all."

They can stay green for longer when a bus is approaching, or switch from red to green more quickly if a bus is waiting. "These lights should also allow cyclists to pass through without waiting," Stevenson said.

The park's perimeter has just one bike lane - a northbound-only lane up Central Park West. As a result, cyclists and advocates noted, people biking for reasons other than recreation have not other safe option for many of their trips.
