The president of the NSW Board of Jewish Deputies, David Ossip, said it cannot be disputed that a federal royal commission was needed, to loud cheers and applause from the crowd of up to 15,000 people gathered at Bondi, where a minute's silence was held at 6.47pm, the time the attack began. Ossip's plea was echoed by the president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Daniel Aghion, who thanked Ossip for the courage to say it.

Couple in dashcam footage who were killed trying to fight off Bondi shooter identified as Boris and Sofia Gurman

Dashcam footage posted to the Chinese social media platform Rednote showed the moment Boris, wearing a purple shirt, tackled shooter Sajid Akram on Campbell Parade in Bondi as he emerged from his car, which had an Islamic State flag draped over the front windscreen. Boris appears to push Akram on to the road and wrestle a gun from his hands. Sofia was also involved in the confrontation. The footage was posted to social media by a Sydney resident whose dashcam unexpectedly caught the incident.

Pat Cummins says Bondi terror attack hit home pretty hard' as tributes flow before third Ashes Test

Like most other Aussies and people in the world, I was just horrified watching on, Cummins said. We had just put the kids to bed and flicked on the news as that was coming through. Me and my wife were watching in disbelief. It's a place that's just around the corner from where we live and we take the kids there all the time. It's hit home pretty hard. We really feel for the Bondi community and the Jewish community in particular.
