This turned out to be a very British night for the Baftas, a smidgen more British than usual in fact. It started out with the Hollywood A-listers in the audience being presented with hilarious British snacks, of whose existence they had no more idea than they had of life forms on the moons of Saturn. Emma Stone got some Hula Hoops, Timothee Chalamet had a bag of Scampi Fries and Leonardo DiCaprio got his laughing gear around a Hobnob flapjack.

The BAFTA Film Awards, the Oscars' sophisticated, daffy British cousin, released its list of nominees this morning with the assistance of presenters Aimee Lou Wood and David Johnson, with One Battle After Anotherand leading the pack. Most notable about this lineup of nominees are those who were snubbed by the Oscars: Chase Infiniti in Leading Actress for OBAA,Odessa A'Zion in Supporting for Marty Supreme, and Paul Mescal in Supporting for playing Shakespeare in Hamnet.

'For Bridget to be honoured as a British icon with her own statue alongside Paddington Bear, Mary Poppins and Admiral Lord Nelson (alright, he's down the road a bit!) is a huge thrill,' says Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding, 'and reason for everyone to raise a glass of chardonnay to being "just as you are". I am touched and delighted for Bridget and hope that [her] mummy pants will ensure a sleek silhouette for this exciting statue unveiling.'
