We're going to have to really be on a road to committing to the American people that when they need a doctor, they will get one. I am very much a proponent of Medicare for all. I understand from all pragmatic sensibilities that may not happen in our lifetime, but courageous Democrats need to be pushing towards care for all, for every single person in this country, regardless of their status.
Fourteen Angelenos have qualified to run for mayor, including incumbent Karen Bass, City Councilmember Nithya Raman and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt. Seven City Council incumbents face at least one challenger, while Councilmember Monica Rodriguez is running unopposed to represent her northeast San Fernando Valley district.
On Jan. 29, Republicans and Democrats in the Senate reached an agreement to remove funding for DHS from a package of six spending bills. The deal approves funding for the treasury, the federal court system, the Health Department, the War Department (previously the Department of Defense) and other agencies until Sept. 30. DHS funding will continue at its current level for two weeks while both sides work out a new deal to fund the agency.
This is a historical moment for us, for our community to take our voice from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. I understand our pain and I understand our voices. Supervisor Connie Chan emphasized her immigrant experience arriving in Chinatown without speaking English, positioning herself as uniquely qualified to represent the community's interests in Congress.
Proponents said Senate Bill 747 is a first in the nation type of bill and it's called the No Kings Act, a reference to the nationwide demonstrations against President Donald Trump that have occurred throughout his second term that closes a loophole that allowed federal officers to be treated differently than state or local law enforcement for alleged constitutional violations.
I had to set fire to my scorecard, and to the column I had just drafted, which touched on all the expected big-name challengers who had bowed out of the mayoral race in the past several days: L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, billionaire businessman Rick Caruso (who forced a runoff with Bass the last time around), and former L.A. Unified schools chief Austin Beutner.
The GOP asked a federal court in Los Angeles to temporarily block California's new map of congressional districts, which Democrats engineered to favor their party's candidates and counter similar partisan gerrymandering from Texas and other GOP-led states. Attorneys for the GOP argued that the new district maps, placed on the ballot by the Democratic-led state Legislature, were unconstitutional because they illegally favor Latino voters
It's easy to see why the party's voters have such a favorable view of his political skills. The California governor has combined an ideological flexibility-lately embracing both the "abundance agenda" and dialogues with conservatives-with a relentless mockery of President Trump. His new persona as a fighting moderate, a Democrat in tune with the country's shifting desires and ruthless toward the man at the top, deftly speaks to the needs of a party desperate to regain the White House.
Republicans' weak attempt to silence voters failed. California voters overwhelmingly supported Prop 50 - to respond to Trump's rigging in Texas - and that is exactly what this court concluded,
