"He's 0-for-30. Simple as that. You can say there's a lot of line drives in there, but you get to a place of playing every day for a week and not having any results, and it wears on you. It wears on you mentally as much as anything."
Teams that look strong on paper can often perform much less impressively if even one or two key players are removed from the mix, and even the very best teams can look vulnerable with a long enough string of tough-luck injuries.
The Cardinals have designated right-hander Zak Kent for assignment, the team announced. The move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Ramon Urias. St. Louis claimed Kent off waivers from the Rangers earlier this week. It's been a whirlwind offseason for Kent, with the Cardinals at the center of it. The club picked him up off waivers from the Guardians back in December.
The Cardinals' Winter Warmup fan event is this weekend, and newly-minted president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom took questions directly from fans as part of the festivities. As noted by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, one of those questions was about former Cardinals (and current free agent) Harrison Bader's availability on the market. In his response to that question, Bloom suggested that the same has "room" for a right-handed outfielder on the roster before acknowledging that Bader is a possibility to fill that void. Bloom declined to discuss Bader's asking price, or any other specifics of contract talks.
The No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 draft has made good on that lofty slot since entering pro ball. After a solid cup of coffee at Single-A in his draft year, Wetherholt's performance exploded in 2025 when he slashed .306/.421/.510 across 109 games split between the Double-A and Triple-A level. That would be impressive for virtually any prospect, but it's especially so for Wetherholt, who is just 22 years old and adds strong infield defense and impressive baserunning to his well-rounded game.
Bloom indicated at today's press conference regarding the Donovan trade that he's still hoping to add to his outfield, be it via free agency or trade ( via Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat). It's not the first time that Bloom has signaled a desire to add to his outfield. He voiced a desire to add a righty-swinging outfielder prior to the holidays, but those comments are now six weeks old, so it's of at least some note that he's still publicly stating that interest.
The St. Lous Cardinals continue to dismantle their team. Sure it might feel like a necessary move considering the Cardinals have missed the playoffs the last three years and their best finish in that span was an 83-79 record, ten games back in the NL Central Division and six games out of a Wild Card spot. Already this offseason the Cardinals
