Dallas County is paying $600,000 to two men who sued after they were arrested in 2019 while testing courthouse security for Iowa's Judicial Branch, their lawyer says. Gary DeMercurio and Justin Wynn were arrested Sept. 11, 2019, after breaking into the Dallas County Courthouse. They spent about 20 hours in jail and were charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools, though the charges were later dropped.

Two young girls have been awarded over $30 million in damages after reaching a settlement Friday in a lawsuit over the death of their 11-year-old sister. According to the lawsuit, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, Arabella McCormack endured starvation and torture at the hands of her adoptive family before her death in 2022. Although the alleged abuse lasted for years, the lawsuit says that time after time, adults did nothing to save the three sisters from their torment.
Police said Taylor Steven Brindley drove his Jeep through a stop sign on Center Road and struck a Ford F-150. The crash severely injured the driver of the Ford and two passengers. Novato police arrested Brindley, then 24, on suspicion of intoxicated driving, reckless driving causing injuries, blowing a stop sign and driving with a suspended license for a prior DUI case. The injured driver, 70-year-old Jimmy Lee Hogges of Novato, died at a hospital the next day.

A historic East Bay company that generated the foul stench of sewage odor that polluted a town's air has settled a lawsuit with Contra Costa County prosecutors for approximately $500,000, authorities said Tuesday. C&H Sugar, whose plant has been a staple in the unincorporated city of Crockett since 1906, committed the odor violations in 2022 at a wastewater treatment plant it jointly owns at Dowrelio Drive, according to a statement from the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
