Durand Jones and the Indications have built a following on modern soul that feels warm, textured, and deeply rooted in classic R&B traditions. Formed in Bloomington, Indiana, the band leans into rich harmonies, tight rhythm sections, and songwriting that balances vulnerability with groove.
Whatever they are, it's clear Umphrey's McGee defies all genres. That's probably why this band draws an audience of hippies, rockers and "normies" with their collective jams and meticulous playing, combining the most unlikely of genres like electronic and metal with folk and soul.
The 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine feels a little memory-holed today but it was an absolute indie cinema sensation at the time, a box office hit and an Oscar winner. Its soundtrack, by indie folk band DeVotchKa, was also a big hit, unavoidable in coffee shops at the time. For the 20th anniversary of the film and soundtrack, DeVotchka will be playing "A Tribute to Little Miss Sunshine" on tour. All dates are listed below.
The new dates arrive in and around Dacus' summer festival appearances, which include sets at Winnipeg Folk Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Minnesota Yacht Club, and San Francisco's Outside Lands. The run also follows her previously-announced West Coast run in May, where she'll play shows in Vancouver, Sacramento, Salt Lake City (for Kilby Block Party), and more.
Charley Crockett has announced a summer tour in support of his upcoming album Age of the Ram, which will have him out with Durand Jones & The Indications, Nat Myers, Sierra Hull, Pony Bradshaw, and others along the way.
While Modern Baseball co-vocalist Jake Ewald and bassist Ian Farmer have remained very busy with Slaughter Beach, Dog since MoBo's breakup, and drummer Sean Huber stayed active with Steady Hands, it's been a while since co-vocalist Bren Lukens has performed or really done anything at all in the public eye.
Tiny Desk Radio co-hosts Bobby Carter and Anamaria Sayre present performances from the next generation of Americana music: Sierra Ferrell, whose sound is firmly planted in the roots tradition; Wyatt Flores, an Oklahoman "red dirt" country singer; and MJ Lenderman, an indie rocker who doubles as the guitarist for the band Wednesday. Musician and visual artist Dan Reeder is one of the longest signees to Oh Boy Records (which John Prine signed him to), and more recently artists like boygenius (who covered his song "Stay Down, Man"), Jeff Tweedy and Wilco, and Joshua Ray Walker have revealed themselves as fans; he also performed during the first ever Newport Folk Festival edition of Jack Antonoff's Ally Coalition Talent Show last year, where he was joined onstage by Waxahatchee, Weyes Blood, and Bleachers.
At only 17 years old, the Eugene, Ore., native Maria Telesheva is already an accordion wizard. I have trouble simply pushing the right button in an elevator. So watching Telesheva's fingers fly gracefully over more than 200 buttons on her bayan, as the instrument is called in Russia, is a thrill. She makes the tightly braided voices in J.S. Bach's thicket of counterpoint sing and dance.
49 Winchester will release their new album Change of Plans on May 15 via Lucille Records / MCA. It's their first record for a major label after two on New West, and they made it with producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson). Listen to lead single " In the Middle of It " below. In press materials, Taylor said "In the Middle of It" was inspired by "Highway 10 through the desert towns, Los Angeles to El Paso ... Art Bell's Coast to Coast droning from a bunker in the middle of Nevada. Ghosts and UFOs and vagabonds. The engine sings out over the long lightning fields. In the middle of it: the country, the story, the relationships."

"My father spent most of his waking and sometimes sleeping hours in there...he'd ramble in and stumble out. I wrote this song after he passed at the fair young age of 62. The kind of tribute song he would have approved of. My father was a proud man. Loved his family and his drink in equal measure. My father showed his love shoulder to shoulder, not face to face."
