The U.S.'s population growth is slowing as immigration has declined amid President Donald Trump's deportation push and stricter border policies. According to new Census Bureau data, the drop-off is the biggest since the COVID-19 pandemic. From July 2024 to July 2025, the population of the United States grew by 1.8 million people (about 0.5%). This was mostly driven by immigration: During that period, the U.S. added 1.3 million immigrants.

ICE, which was formed in response to the terror attacks on 11 September 2001, is a federal agency that enforces the United States' immigration laws by identifying and deporting people who breach such laws, as well as those who are viewed as a threat to national security. Since Trump returned to the White House for his second term, his administration has led a huge campaign to bolster the work of ICE and make good on his anti-immigration campaign promise to carry out mass deportations.

But a year later, it is clear to everyone that the Trump administration's stated mission of deporting the worst of the worst is entirely false. We have witnessed it firsthand for months on end at 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, where masked ICE agents have stalked the hallways and ambushed law-abiding immigrants complying with court orders to attend hearings.

The volume of the revocations reflects the broad nature of the crackdown Trump initiated when he returned to the White House last year. The administration has claimed to have overseen more than 2.5 million voluntary departures and deportations, a record-breaking achievement, it said last month. Some of those deportations, however, have included immigrants who held valid visas, raising questions about due process and human rights.

The now infamous terrorism confinement centre, known as Cecot, is Latin America's largest prison with capacity for 40,000 inmates. The reforms will make refugee status temporary, extend the wait for permanent settlement from five years to 20, and allow the removal of families with children who have no right to remain.

The request is for a round-the-clock surveillance operation using the latest technology, including artificial intelligence, to support efforts to increase deportations.
