The January drop was the largest release of documents pertaining to the department's investigation into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and academics' names have routinely surfaced in the emails, though none have been implicated in his crimes. In ensuing weeks, institutions have opened probes into their professors' ties to Epstein and in some cases have suspended faculty as a result.

His resignation comes "in connection with the ongoing review by the University of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently released by the government," the spokesperson, Jason Newton, said in a statement.

But Wexner was personally, professionally and financially tied to convicted sex offender Epstein for decades. Last year, Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of helping Epstein traffic teenage girls, described Wexner as once being the financier's "closest friend." Wexner says he cut ties with Epstein in 2007 and accused him of misappropriating $46 million.

The disgraced financier invited Ovitz to his private Caribbean island in 2012 and said he knew Ovitz "well" in emails to a Microsoft executive and his publicist, Peggy Siegal.

Epstein claimed within one email he helped Gates get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with russian girls and illicit trysts, with married women. The email also references Gates asking Epstein to provide Adderall for bridge tournaments. One draft email alleges that Gates tearfully asked Epstein to delete messages referencing an STD, your request that I provide you antibiotics that you can surreptitiously give to Melinda, and to delete explicit personal details about his penis.
