Band of Skulls emerged from Southampton, England with a gritty, blues-soaked take on garage rock that felt both scrappy and deliberate. Their breakout album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey introduced a sound built on thick riffs, tight rhythm work, and a push-pull vocal dynamic that gave the songs real tension.

Last May, Ty Segall released Possession, a sophisticated set of psychedelic bubblegum that featured a string section, saxophone, and surprisingly sweet melodies. "Live" "at" "the" "BBC," taped about a decade ago, may take recent fans of the L.A.-based garage rocker by surprise. Now in his late 30s, Segall's already released 17 solo albums. The prolific songwriter has a knack for abrupt swings, so no one should be too shocked.

Like other Midwest rockers before them- The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, and Guided By Voices all come to mind-Liquid Mike like their runtimes short, their guitars loud, and their hooks easy to sing along to no matter how many beers you've had. The band's first five albums were mostly inspired by Maple's time driving the mail truck around Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the small-town shenanigans he and his friends got up to off the clock.
