Surf London will create an inland, heart-shaped wave lake in Enfield capable of producing up to 2-metre waves and 1,000 waves per hour.
The unlikely setting is Lee Valley Leisure Complex in Enfield, a 26-mile park crossing London, Essex and Hertfordshire. The location has been earmarked to be the home of the capital's first inland surf destination, Surf London. At its heart will be a vast 200-metre-wide surf lake, powered by next-generation wave-making tech. Beginners will be able to catch gentle 50-centimetre rollers, while seasoned surfers can test themselves against breaks reaching almost two metres.
A north London council has approved plans for an inland surfing facility in the Lea Valley. The Surf London scheme at Pickett's Lock will see a new artificial lake built on parts of Lee Valley Golf Course and Lee Valley Camping and Caravan Park. Enfield Council's planning committee unanimously approved the plan, in which the golf course will be reduced in size and the campsite redeveloped.
