Whatever about the big house in the Phoenix Park, Jim Gavin's name in the political news cycle is also a reminder of the Mansion House on Dawson Street. We are fast approaching the two-year anniversary of Gavin's appearance before the Dáil's Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage, where he outlined the proposals of the Citizens' Assembly on the need for a directly elected mayor to "lead and represent the city of Dublin".

For nearly four decades, I've dedicated my life to public service, and I've proudly worn the uniform of the Defence Forces at home and overseas. I'm proud of my contribution to helping lead the largest UN mission of the 21st century, and I've had many other roles, showing my commitment to building our communities and serving our public. I'm standing because I believe in our country, and I believe in the incredibly positive role that the president can play.
