Mahmood emphasized a need for accountability, stating, "On one level you could say, well, accountability is occurring because these criminals are facing the full force of the law, but the way that this scandal has played out shows systemic failure."
The police truly screwed this one up," Jeff Hershberg, a criminal defence lawyer not involved in the case, told CBC News. "When you have a confluence of errors and lying on the stand trying to mislead a judge, the only result that should come is dismissal of the charges.
"It is important to remember that the victims of crime are the only participants in our criminal justice system who did not choose to be there and it is absolutely critical that we ensure that victims, their families, and their voices are never forgotten."
