Zimbabwe and Zambia reject US health aid agreements perceived as exploitative in exchange for sensitive data and mineral access.
After nearly a decade spent transforming Endeavour Mining into one of the world's ten largest gold producers, de Montessus is returning to what has long defined his career: building scale, discipline and credibility in frontier markets where volatility is the rule rather than the exception.
A potent neurotoxin capable of causing lifelong damage to the lungs, brain, skin and other organs, mercury is strictly regulated worldwide. Children, in particular, can suffer severe developmental impairment when exposed. A trace element that occurs naturally in rocks such as limestone, as well as in coal and crude oil, mercury remains locked underground for millions of years, largely entering the ecological cycle through human activity.
It's a little-known fact that Columbia University, in Manhattan, was home to the first mining school in America-the School of Mines-founded in 1864. For the past three decades, the university's program has been mothballed. Parts of its curriculum were subsumed into the more fashionable subjects of earth and environmental engineering. But next fall, Columbia University will offer a bachelor of science degree in mining engineering once again.
A former miner at the site told The Associated Press there have been repeated landslides because the tunnels are dug by hand, poorly constructed, and left without maintenance. "People dig everywhere, without control or safety measures. In a single pit, there can be as many as 500 miners, and because the tunnels run parallel, one collapse can affect many pits at once," Clovis Mafare said.
Britain's only tin mine could end up exporting much of its future production to the United States after the American government signalled it is prepared to provide up to $225 million (£166 million) in financing to revive the historic South Crofty site in Cornwall. Cornish Metals, which is working to bring the South Crofty mine near Camborne back into production, has received a letter of interest from the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Exim),
Donald Trump's EPA has said that easing the pollution standards for coal plants would alleviate costs for utilities that run older coal plants at a time when demand for power is soaring amid the expansion of datacenters used for artificial intelligence. But environmental groups have said that weakening standards for mercury, a neurotoxin that can impair babies' brain development, and other air toxics will lead to higher health-related costs.
Amazon's data centers will reportedly utilize copper from a mine in Arizona that's leaching metal from ores using microorganisms, the Wall Street Journal reports. Amazon Web Services will be the first customer for Nuton Technologies, which developed the "bioleaching" technology. AWS will also be providing "cloud-based data and analytics support," helping to optimize Nuton's mining process. Nuton's bioleaching method uses naturally-occurring microorganisms to extract copper from low-grade ore that would otherwise be too expensive to mine,
A 71-year-old man died on Monday after falling into a large vat of mineral oil at a New Jersey chemical plant, police and the company said Tuesday. The incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. at the Bayway Chemical Plant in Linden when the subcontractor fell into a 6,000-gallon container he was loading with oil. He was retrieved by responders from the Bayway and Linden fire departments, but pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Mexico's Attorney General's Office said on Monday that authorities have identified five bodies found at a property in El Verde, a rural locality in the state of Sinaloa, and are working to identify the remains of five other people. It is important to note that prosecutorial authorities have remained in contact with the victims' relatives, the office said in a statement. In the cases where the bodies have already been identified, they will be transferred to the states of Zacatecas in two cases, as well as to Chihuahua, Sonora, and Guerrero, it added.
A man is dead after an industrial accident in Vaughan on Thursday, said York police. Officers responded to an accident around noon on Thursday on Applewood Crescent, police said in an emailed statement. A man was pronounced dead at the scene after being assessed by paramedics on site. Police said the Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident.
Why it matters: Positive stock performance helps explain why so many free-market capitalists have signed onto something that seems more socialist than not. And why others will do so when given the opportunity. By the numbers: The White House appears to have agreed to equity deals with nine companies, most which are publicly traded. The public cohort saw their share prices climb an average of 85% between the time of announcement (or press leak, if earlier) and yesterday, per an Axios analysis.
Searchers have found a missing Queensland coalmine worker dead a day after he became trapped in a roof collapse. The man was inside the Curragh mine in central Queensland when the collapse happened about 3pm on Friday. There were fears he was as deep as 1km underground. One worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked through the night to stabilise the site and access the second individual.
The abrdn Platinum ETF Trust ( NYSEARCA:PPLT) has surged 185% over the past year, transforming platinum from an overlooked industrial metal into a standout commodity performer. The rally reflects a fundamental shift in supply-demand dynamics that has platinum outpacing even gold's strong performance. Investors now face the question of whether this momentum can continue or if the rally has run too far.
With the price of a single ounce of gold now currently hovering around $4,700 (right around its all-time high), the question of course is whether it's too late for investors to dive in. I'm of the view that this momentum rally is probably warranted. That's in part due to the underlying fundamentals of gold and its overall market capitalization relative to stocks (which is still low, despite its recent rally).
Ten days before schools reopen for the summer term in eastern Zimbabwe, Hellen Tibu is worried about how she will pay the fees for her sister's education. The 22-year-old landmine-disposal expert smooths the creases from her younger sister's uniform as it hangs on the washing line outside a relative's rooms in Sakubva, a densely populated township in Mutare. The shirt is faded around the collar and a new one is needed.
