Indigenous communities have seen dramatic changes, from rescinding land-management policies that were more inclusive of Indigenous knowledge to reducing $1.5 billion in climate funding for tribal initiatives.
"Tucked in south central Wisconsin, just 3.5 hours north of Chicago and 1.5 hours from Milwaukee, Green Lake has earned the nickname of the 'Hamptons of the Midwest.' Families have been summering there since the 1800s, when the shoreline was dotted with a handful of rustic resorts."
More than a third of the nation's local newspapers have folded in the last 20 years, with the Western U.S. being especially hard-hit, including significant losses in Utah and New Mexico.
The fact that the Burns Paiute and Bannock Shoshone tribes are still battling our government and politicians for protection of the sagebrush steppe habitat and our native sage grouse isn't spiritually uplifting.
We found our route but advanced only a few hundred yards before encountering an impassable logjam. The dense forests on either side meant that we couldn't go around it, only through.
The law allegedly restricts any flags that 'represent a political party, race, sexual orientation, gender, or political ideology' from being flown on government property and public schools. However, the law has exceptions for the flying of the Confederate flag - a racist banner that shows support for owning Black slaves - as well as for the 'official' flags of 'any county, municipality, special district, or other political subdivision within the state.'
When you have people sleepwalking into an authoritarian regime, it's up to us to sound the alarm. People feel isolated, helpless and hopeless. And when you hear about other people who are just like you taking a stand and representing something that you believe, that gives you not only hope, but it gives you power.
We have seen warfare utilize not just kinetic but cyber-attacks as well to support their endgame and their goals, so being able to anticipate what our adversaries are doing in the cyber landscape is critical to our ability to conduct warfare.
Montana's largest annual cinematic event will roar back to life in Missoula from February 13 through 22, and this year's program features a slew of world premieres, along with a large handful of films set to debut at Sundance later this month, among them Brydie O'Connor's Barbara Forever, Efraín Mojica and Rebecca Zweig's Jaripeo, Rachael J. Morrison's Joybubbles, and Sam Green's The Oldest Person in the World.
Prospect and refuge: These two themes have long guided the work of Tom Kundig. Siting houses in some of America's most breathtaking but also rugged terrains, the AD100 architect takes care to create a deep sense of shelter-nestling buildings into hillsides, even blasting into rock-and engineer awe through sweeping vistas and intimate connections to nature. "Architecture is not the center of the world," he has often said. "It's the landscape that's the center of the world for me."
My father was a petroleum geologist. A lot of my childhood, he was gone, away on oil rigs in the Powder River Basin and remote parts of Wyoming, living in man camps long before cellphones. We had to wait days to talk to him. When he went into the nearest town to shower, he'd find a payphone and call us. I was always breathless with news.
Wildlife populations are in decline. Recreation sites are crowded and often underfunded. Wildfires are larger, more destructive and harder to control. Climate change is reshaping natural systems, from ocean fisheries to mountain snowpacks, faster than institutions can respond. At the same time, communities are being asked to host new energy projects, transmission lines and mineral development - often without clear processes, adequate resources or trust that decisions are being made in the public interest.
As I watch masked federal agents rip apart Minneapolis and the social fabric of our country, I wonder how we will recover. Pretti and Good were shot trying to protect their neighbors. But will the bridges that community leaders, college outreach programs and policymakers built between immigrant communities and their adoptive homes crumble under the weight of the federal government's crackdown?
In November 2014, I crammed my possessions into my Toyota Corolla and drove 2,000 miles from Maryland to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a job. While temporarily staying with a friend's brother, I found the perfect house to rent. On a cold December morning, ready to head to my new place, I turned the key in my car's ignition. But I only heard rapid, grinding clicks. I turned the key again and again. The engine refused to work.
Whether you're hoping to see the wildflowers or planning to drive the scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road, there's something here for every kind of traveler, style, and budget. If you're looking to fully immerse yourself in this spectacular environment, there are a ton of campgrounds in and around the national park, plus a few glamping sites and RV parks nearby if you prefer not to rough it as much.
Just 10 miles south of Yellowstone, this incredible national park is home to beautiful sights, breathtaking nature, and some great hotels and vacation rentals to boot. As a local, I've visited Grand Teton National Park countless times, and I've spent just as many nights camping in a tent in the park as I have in one of the wonderful accommodations nearby.
After a lean start to this season, the Montana clouds finally opened up, dropping 11 inches of snow over the last 3 days at Big Sky Resort. This snowfall, mixed with some high alpine wind, left the slopes immaculate for the Bluebird day this past Sunday. While coverage on certain portions of the mountain remained spotty, if you know where to look, some fresh untracked snow was your reward.
Home to Grand Teton National Park, world-class ski slopes, and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a destination unlike any other. Victoria Gonzalez, lead Pathfinder at The Cloudveil, describes the region as "the intersection of wilderness and the resilient American spirit." In other words, it's somewhere travelers can go to experience a "flourishing cultural arts center with celebrated restaurants, a playground for year-round recreational opportunities ... and natural wonder."
In ice climbing, you want to try to have a solid base with your footing and to get the ice axes over the tops of each other to have the most leverage. We worked on these skills from the comfort of top roping, which entails having a fixed anchor you can rappel down from. This gives the feeling like you are in a climbing gym and greatly reduces the risks.
