California's ski season is ending, with only three resorts remaining open, including Mammoth Mountain until at least Memorial Day.
You won't find either on the Epic or Icon passes, which means fewer skiers and shorter lift lines. The proximity to Flathead Lake, even larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, also means stunning views and a phenomenon called "snow ghosts" - when ice crystals form on the pines. Both resorts have long, lazy runs for multigenerational skiers and boarders but also challenging terrain for advanced skiers and riders.
The 2025-26 winter saw extreme weather, with the eastern half experiencing consistent cold and heavy snowfall, while the western half endured record warmth and a lack of snowfall.
"Last season's pass was publicly on sale for around 30 days in total. This spring, we are down to a single day. There's a rising demand for affordable, independent, and authentic ski experiences."
Killington Ski Resort in Vermont more than earns the nickname "Beast of the East." After all, it's home to the second-highest summit across the entire Green Mountain range. But that's not its only superlative. It's also the largest ski resort on the East Coast, with six mountain peaks, 19 lifts, 155 trails, a half-pipe, and the highest vertical drop in New England at 3,050 feet.
Whitefish/Kalispell, Montana: United Airlines has expanded its direct service from San Francisco to Glacier Park International Airport, a short drive to world-class Whitefish Mountain Resort and the smaller, family-owned Blacktail Mountain Ski Area. You won't find either on the Epic or Icon passes, which means fewer skiers and shorter lift lines. The proximity to Flathead Lake, even larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, also means stunning views and a phenomenon called snow ghosts when ice crystals form on the pines.
The grand château-style resort sits at the base of the 40-passenger aerial tram, the most direct way of accessing the ski area's notoriously steep and deep terrain; Alyeska has beginner areas, but it's great for intermediate and advanced skiers. Across more than 1,600 skiable acres are 76 named trails, among them the North Face, North America's longest continuous double-black-diamond ski run.
I spent 18 seasons here before moving to Park City, UT, in 2018, and I long to come back every day. This place shaped me as a man and a skier. It forged my career and gave me a skillset that has translated into an ability to ski all over the world, and I'm forever grateful.
Mt. Baker is the PNW's snow vacuum. It's close enough to the Pacific to get storm after storm, and the North Cascades do what they do best: force moist air straight up, wring it out, and bury everything in sight. Maritime storms roll in wet and heavy, then pile up fast when they hit terrain.
The Bridgeport Winter Trail System is a new winter recreation area in the region. Anyone hoping to explore scenic new routes and possibly take a dip underneath a natural thermal waterfall should add this groomed winter trail to their list.
When winter takes hold in the Eastern Sierra, the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area (BWRA) becomes a popular destination for backcountry enthusiasts. Powderhounds flock to this area during the cold winter months, usually with snowmobiles. Shortly after you turn onto Highway 108 (Sonora Pass), the snow starts, and the journey begins. Located seven miles up the snow-covered highway, the BWRA is the gateway to remote and technical terrain in the heart of the Sierra.
Whether you love it, hate it, or are just hearing about it for the first time, Alterra's Reserve Pass is likely here to stay. But if you don't know what the Reserve Pass is, it takes a slightly different appearance at a variety of Alterra ski resorts, generally encompassing a dedicated priority lift line and exclusive amenities. It's an intriguing concept, and one that makes sense in an ever-growing segmented ski resort product lineup.
Conditions ReportContinuing on my journey through Visit Idaho's Gem Line, I headed from Sandpoint, Idaho, to Kellogg, Idaho, for another powder day at Silver Mountain. I had skied at Silver last season and had a great time lapping pristine corduroy during a stint of high pressure. I was excited to return with plenty of recent fresh snow to explore some of the steeper, off-piste terrain at Silver.
There's still nearly 2 months until the end of winter and the start of spring, but one Pennsylvania ski resort is already stating their intentions for what they hope will be their longest season in their history. A Mountain Update from Camelback Resort VP & General Manager Jason Bays discussed their plans for the spring. Right now, Camelback is planning to keep skiing and snowboarding going daily until April 12th, but it hopefully won't end there.
