Southern California, especially Los Angeles, has many breathtaking botanical gardens and wildflower-lined hiking trails. But it's also exciting to visit private home gardens that are rarely open to the public and find inspiration even if you don't have space for a garden at home.
The Point Reyes National Seashore encompasses just over 71,000 acres. It was established in 1962 thanks to the work of Clem Miller, a United States congressman from Marin County. Mount Wittenberg is the tallest mountain at 1,407 feet in elevation. Point Reyes Hill is 1,336 feet and Mount Vision is 1,282 feet. The San Andreas Fault separates the Point Reyes peninsula from the rest of Marin County.
Conservation and horticulture groups say year-round low-mowing while selectively leaving native plants to grow can save huge amounts of drinking water and lead to lasting and impactful ecological changes.
"Native vegetation is the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. For example, plants provide habitat, stabilize soil and serve as forage for wildlife. They also attract insects that feed baby salmon and steelhead."
