Political topics in therapy can violate boundaries, damage alliances, and abruptly rupture long-term treatment when therapists abandon neutrality.
The doctor treated hundreds of children from 2017 to 2022 at Great Ormond Street Hospital (Gosh) in London, with independent experts saying in a new review that his surgery fell well below the level expected in several areas. Many patients came to harm or were left in pain, with some going on to need further surgery. Proper consent was also not obtained in some cases, while Mr Jabbar also had an "unjustified preference for certain surgical techniques including unconventional or unrecognised procedures".
As part of the report, the panel contacted 325 women who had been treated by Mr Hay between 2015 and 2018, asking them to share their experiences. In addition to the 325 patients, 58 women had already been reviewed in an earlier assessment carried out in 2019. In Wednesday's report, the steering group panel identified two women as suffering "severe physical harm", with three sustaining "moderate physical harm" under Mr Hay's care.
