In 1904, Portland was abuzz with anticipation for the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, leading to a surge in vendor interest and ambitious proposals for the event, including a toboggan slide and an observation tower.

Built in 1913, the building calls back to the city's early development, much like the commercial clusters just a block or few long that are nestled in so many neighborhoods.

Schacht, originally born in Germany and educated in Europe, moved to Portland in 1883 after the German government claimed his Hamburg home via eminent domain, and he decided to move as far away as possible. While his work over his four-decade career spanned a variety of architectural styles, it has been noted that after 1900, he was "among the first Arts and Crafts-influenced architects to practice west of the Rocky Mountains."

In 2012, someone taped a giant drill bit to the horse's head, turning it into a unicorn and somehow causing $1,800 of damage.
