The enormous increase in energy consumption driven by AI has brought a step change in datacentre design. Core to this is the requirement to power and cool GPUs to an extent that was not necessary in "traditional" air-cooled datacentres. Hence the advent of the AI factory.
Hut 8 signed a $9.8 billion lease for 352 MW of AI data center capacity at Beacon Point in Texas, marking the second major AI project after River Bend. The deal includes a potential $25.1 billion in contract value with three optional five-year renewal terms. Beacon Point now has 597 MW of contracted IT capacity, with the first phase expected to begin energization in Q1 2027.
Finland's national grid operator Fingrid said Tuesday it had discovered a technical problem on a cable between Finland and Sweden, causing the power connection to be offline for "hours." The disruption affected Fenno-Skan 2, an 800 megawatt (MW) high-voltage direct current cable linking the two Nordic countries.
