1 week agoBooing Commencement Speakers Over AI Is Becoming a Trend
AI will shape every profession and classroom, and students should actively shape AI rather than surrender agency.
Imagination, the ability that allows us to mentally represent things that are not directly perceived by our senses, is on the decline. It's one of the effects that new technologies have had on our minds, and public discourse appears to have all but forgotten it as a key cognitive resource.
You can't really get people what they actually want-a raise, a beach house, the reassurance that every decision they ever made was the correct decision. So we end up paying Jeff Bezos to overnight some kitschy piece of plastic that will sit in a landfill in six months.
When the cashier said she was exhausted from working extra shifts to make some money for Christmas, the man behind me chipped in that it would be worse once she takes all our money (in case Rachel Reeves was wondering, her budget pitch-rolling is definitely cutting through). Routine enough, if he hadn't gone on to add that she and the rest of the government needed taking out, and that there were plenty of ex-military men around who should know what to do, before continuing in more graphic fashion until the queue fell quiet and feet began shuffling.
It's certainly clear that the issues of boys and men haven't gone away in the last few years. If anything, they're getting even more attention, which is good when it's the right kind of attention. And what I've noticed is that, perhaps as a result of videos like this and of the broader conversation, is that the permission space to talk about the issues of boys and men seems to have broadened, whereas it felt like a very difficult thing to talk about.
Kemi Badenoch was about to make a speech about restricting non-British nationals' access to disability and sickness benefits, another instalment of her toxic quest to divide people into makers and takers.
Oscar Wilde famously noted that there's only one thing worse than being talked about - not being talked about at all. This resonates with Ireland's aviation discussions, particularly regarding Dublin Airport, which have been extensive but often lacking in substance.
The new Banksy artwork featuring a stenciled lighthouse has sparked widespread speculation about its meaning and location, showcasing the elusive artist's ongoing impact on public discourse.
